Why the US Fears Russian Peacemaking in Afghanistan
by MK Bhadrakumar Indian Punchline[field_author_has_account_] (1,192 views) on Thu, Nov 15, 2018
Article from two weeks ago before the Moscow conference, but the analysis still very relevant. Within hours of the announcement on Saturday by the Russian Foreign Ministry that the second meeting of the Moscow format of consultations on Afghanistan will take place on November 9, the US government-funded Radio Free Europe and Liberty has announced that the Afghan government will not participate in the forthcoming meeting. The text of the Russian Foreign Ministry statement is reproduced below:

Russian Navy’s Dilemma; Troubled Sole Carrier Not Fit For Sea – But Vital to Retaining Naval Aviation Capabilities
by Military Watch[field_author_has_account_] (669 views) on Thu, Nov 15, 2018
Russia’s sole aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, has suffered from a number of severe performance shortcomings in recent years which have brought its ability to continue to serve the country’s Navy into serious question. The warship was initially intended to be fielded as part of a large Soviet blue water fleet under an ambitious expansion program, which by the year 2000 would have consisted of 11 carrier warships of four classes. Three Kuznetsov Class vessels were to be the second largest warship class only to the Ulyanovsk Class supercarriers. The collapse of the USSR however led to the decommissioning of the vast majority of the Soviet carrier fleet, with plans for the third Kuznetsov Class warship and the two massive Ulyanovsk Class vessels terminated.

Ukraine Launches Gas War on…Ukraine
by Novinite[field_author_has_account_] (2,434 views) on Thu, Nov 15, 2018
Angry Ukrainians took to the streets and blocked roads Tuesday as hundreds of thousands remain without heating at a time when temperatures are plunging because of a dispute between the national gas company and regional utility providers. The crisis, which affects mostly Ukraine’s center, south and southeast, came after national gas company Naftagaz raised gas prices that some struggling municipalities said were impossibly high for them to pay. Naftagaz has said it will resume supply to utilities companies and powers stations only after they clear the debts or pay for supplies in advance. Residents in Kryvy Rih, a city of 600,000 in Ukraine’s southeast, on Monday set tires on fire and seized the building of the local gas company demanding that the heating be turned on. Temperatures in the area were below zero overnight on Tuesday.

Netanyahu Fails to Mend Russia Ties in Paris
by Marianna Belenkaya Al-Monitor[field_author_has_account_] (2,694 views) on Thu, Nov 15, 2018
The talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Paris turned out to be “successful and significant,” according to Netanyahu. Questions about whether the meeting would even take place were raised until the last moment. At first, Netanyahu even considered canceling the trip to France. However, he ultimately chose to take part in the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

US Midterms Expose the Russia Hacking Nonsense
by Finian Cunningham Strategic Culture[field_author_has_account_] (705 views) on Thu, Nov 15, 2018
Don’t hold your breath for it, but there should be an abject apology coming from US politicians, pundits, media and intelligence agencies. For months leading up to the midterm elections held last week, we were told that the Kremlin was deviously targeting the ballot, in a replay of the way Russian hackers allegedly interfered in the 2016 presidential race to get Donald Trump into the White House. Supposedly reliable news media outlets like the New York Times and heavyweight Senate panels were quoting intelligence sources warning that the “Russians are coming – again”.
